Obituary of Edward Stone Gibbs

Edward Stone “Ted” Gibbs, 79, of Oakland, Maryland, died of complications of lung cancer on Monday, April 10, 2017, at his home in Oakland. He was born on May 18, 1937, at Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia, the younger – by one minute - of a set of fraternal twin boys born to Joseph Shewell Gibbs, III and Joan Stauver Gibbs, both of Wheeling. Mr. Gibbs attended Woodsdale Elementary School and graduated Triadelphia High School, both in Wheeling. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was posted to Reykjavik, Iceland, where he was assigned to Communications. After leaving the Air Force he developed a career in radio communications which lasted throughout his early adulthood - working in major radio markets up and down the eastern US. He was especially fond of his time as “Ted Frost” at WWVA in his home town of Wheeling, WV. In his later years, Mr. Gibbs was a sales executive for credit card processing firms in Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland and continued to be active in these fields in retirement. He was an honorary member of the Mountain Lake Park Tennis Club and was for many years a member of the Oakland Golf Club. He enjoyed sailing and could often be seen at the Deep Creek Lake Yacht Club in the summer months. As their loving “Poppie”, he often visited his granddaughters Faye and Gwen, in Ohio. Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by his fraternal twin, Joseph Shewell “Jay” Gibbs, IV and his sister, Joan Gibbs Clark. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Shewell Randau of Chesterland, Ohio and Erin Stauver Gibbs of Mentor, Ohio; two granddaughters, Faye Ellen Randau and Gwen Antonette Randau, of Chesterland, Ohio; his sister, Kathleen Gibbs of Mountain Lake Park, Maryland and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorial service and interment will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to The Mountain Lake Park Tennis Club, 705 Oak Street, Mountain Lake Park, MD 21550. The C & S FREDLOCK FUNERAL HOME, P.A., Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
