Joan is a dear friend who reached out to me in the early days of my residency in Garrett County. She always had a smile and a word of encouragement, never really knowing how important they were at any particular time. Believe me that many days, they were more important than she could have imagined.
We never really lose friends as long as we remember them, and I will remember Joan and Bill.

As a student at Garrett I will always be grateful to have experienced Joan as a teacher. I had little interest in writing, but she had an amazing ability to inspire me. I remember staying home weekend nights just to write a short story to share with her on Monday morning. Joan was an amazing teacher full of inspiration and positive reinforcement. I was not a gifted or driven student -She made a lasting memory and a real difference in my education.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My sympathy to Joan's family. I have only great memories of Joan from Garrett [Community] College when I attended there and taught there. Joan was a great and kind influence on all with whom she came in contact. She will be sorely missed but her memory will always linger in the halls there and in our minds forever.

Some people become a piece of your life story, a spirit who affirms you, who gladdens your day, your memory of your life experiences. Joan was one of those people to us- a welcoming friend, mother of our friend, Susie, a bright, interested and interesting presence who made you better when you left than when you arrived. We are so very fortunate to have known her. Our condolences to Susie, Mike, Roger, John, and their children.

I don't believe that words will adequately express the loss that is felt at Garrett College. Joan had not worked at the College for some time but her words of wisdom, her kindness, her smile, and her legacy still remain. I feel honored to have known her and worked with her. I have faith that she is at peace and is in a good place. My condolences go out to her loving family. Please find comfort in knowing that Joan is in our hearts and will remain so.
Ann Wellham, Dean of Marketing & Enrollment Management Garrett College.

It's difficult to write words of condolence to the family of Joan, who was a wordsmith extraordinaire. But please know that we'll fondly remember her for her delightful newspaper column, dedication to Garrett College and cheery temperament every time we saw her, from gatherings at the Deep Creek Yacht Club to community events throughout Garrett County.
Peace,
Cindy and Marshall Stacy
