So sorry for your loss. I remember the conversation Steve and I had after Gene Helbig lost his grandson. We couldn't imagine losing a child. Then it happened to both of us. I lost a granddaughter in September. Evan was a handsome and well liked person. He will be greatly missed.

I know none of you except through Chris' obituary in a Frederick newspaper. That thousands of people you’ve never met are so aggrieved of this awful loss is a testament to your parenthood, friendships, and academic and professional associations that surrounded this wonderful young man and contributed to the miracle that he was. I admire you all, am praying for your strength, and can’t begin to comprehend your crushing grief.

To Mary, Steve, and Evan,
I've heard a lot about Chris from my sister, Atsuko. She always said he was a super wonderful boy.
I remember him clearly when I visited your Open House in 1995.
I have a son of his age. I am deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic loss. I just cannot find the words.
Why him?
Everybody loves Chris. God loves him too. God needs him, so God wanted to have Chris near from him.
That's the only reason that I can think of.
May God help you through your difficult time.

My Dears,
I have made a couple of attempts to come to the funeral home today, but I kept bursting into tears. When things happen to young people that I’ve been so fond of – as I was of Chris, I grieve uncontrollably and make a real “cake” out of myself. I didn’t want to put you through it – me “losing it.” I don’t know what to say. This afternoon, I sat staring into space remembering your shining star with such fondness, thinking of his great sense of humor (which had a tinge of devilment in it), and I prayed for you all to find some sort of peace. I know it will take a while to get there. You are a wonderful family, and you’ve done a great job with both of your children. I think sometimes God needs young people like Chris with Him to balance out some of the frustration and disappointment that He at times must feel with the rest of the human race. When Megan Price died, her dad (Sonny) said, “In 20 years, she accomplished more than most people do in 60.” Chris was the same way. I shall miss knowing that he is going along in life excelling at it all and making changes for the good of mankind. Please know that I am thinking about all of you and that my heart is with you. Love, Jane Avery

Chris truly was one of the all around greatest people I have ever met and I am proud to be able to call him my friend. He was definately special and one of a kind. With his potential I don't think there was anything he wasn't capable of and with his negotiating skills I don't think there was anything he couldn't convince anyone else to do either lol. Some of my greatest memories are at Chris' house where not only did he let me stay at every weekend but if I missed one weekend he would lecture me on it the next weekend I visited and ask me why I wasn't there. I'm going to miss him a lot as I think about the good memories and times we shared together including CFC and his annual Mt. Storm birthday parties. Chris was one of the most impressive young people that I have ever met. He accomplished more in his short life than most will accomplish in a lifetime. Most importantly, he was a good person, from good stock--proof that apples don't fall far from their trees. It is truly unfair that someone with so much to offer this world is taken from us so early--we will never understand the reasons for this in our lifetime. As the president of the Vanderbilt Bar Association, he worked tirelessly for the benefit of all students, recognizing concerns and problem situations in need of attention and actively working toward their prompt and meaningful resolution. He was a true leader, enhancing cooperation and collegiality, being a valuable role model and mentor, and serving as an inspiring example to his colleagues as he worked without recognition to help those most in need. His positive spirit and dedication will live on through the cherished memories of those with the good fortune to have known him, as well as his many accomplishments and the ways he inspired and helped others. Through the efforts of Chris, and other caring souls like him, my personal life was spared much misery following the loss of my home and all possessions in the May 2010 flood. With no thought of themselves, people like Chris gave of their time and energy to help others recover, discover, and heal. I realize that my losses were nothing…empty and meaningless. I was only to gain… from the kindness and generosity of strangers like Chris.
To Chris’ family, girlfriend, colleagues, friends, and acquaintances, may you be blessed with sweet memories of a chapter in a book to be continued in yet another volume. This life is maya…good and evil….all an illusion. One day we will realize that it was only a dream. Evidently there are greater plans for Chris, of which we have no knowledge.
