Jim Zim..You will always be one of the Teachers who treated us as people; instead of just 'students'. I only saw you a few times since 1967 graduation; but you always remembered me and was genuinely interested in what was going on in my life. You will be MISSED...Thanks for everything..Ray

I have a heavy heart today over Jim's passing. I will always remember his great sense of humor and the joy he brought to so many. He was a tough teacher but his students benefited greatly from his disciplined nature and his knowledge of mathematics. My daughter was blessed to have had him at SGHS. Thanks for all the memories, Jim. You will be missed by many. "Lainey Bird" - my heart goes out to you. I'll try to stop by and see you sometime when I'm in Oakland again. Take care and peace to your family.

Thoughts and prayers with the Zimmerman Family at this time. I was fortunate to have had Mr. Zimmerman as a teacher for 3 years ('65-'68) and he was, without a doubt, one of the best teachers I ever had. Not only did he do a great job in imparting knowledge of math to his students, but he cared for each of us and encouraged us to be the best we could be in whatever we did in life. My life is richer for having him as a teacher!

I was lucky enough to spend 4 years with Mr. Zimmerman in high school. He was the best teacher I ever had, and it's not even close. I am thankful to have had him as a teacher and as a friend. He still motivates me. "If it were easy, everybody would do it." My best to his family.

I last saw Mr. Zimmerman at the Garrett County Transportation Museum a couple of years ago. We had a lovely chat about the museum and Einstein. More importantly, I had the chance to tell him that after all of these years I still value the challenges he presented his students with in the classroom. He was tough yet kind. My condolences to the entire family. May you all be surrounded by love and happy memories. He surely will be missed by many.

I am so very sad to hear of Mr. Z's passing. He was my trig teacher many years ago at Southern and he had a way making sure you understood math. He was always helpful and kind but tough - you always had the greatest respect for him. My condolences to his family and friends. I haven't been around the Garrett County area for many years but I keep tabs on what is happening there and this truly saddens me. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Zimmerman was far and away the best teacher I ever had in high school or college. He was also a funny compassionate man who told great stories. I have over the years told some of his stories to my son. I once thought I had gotten 100% on one of his tests, but when I got it back he had deducted a point because I misspelled a word! I still can't spell very well, but I did make it through engineering school no doubt because of the math skills I learned from him. When our class gets together at our reunions every 5 years there are always Mr. Zimmerman stories told. I later got to know him as a non-teacher when he would come into Silver Tree and enjoyed his company as just a wonderful person. His letters to the editor of the Republican about fracking were so interesting and enlightening. He is a true Oakland icon who will be missed very much. My condolences to his family.

Mr. Zimmerman, as a staff member at SHS, could be terrifying. As he stared, scowling down at me, a 7th grader, I vowed I would never again be tardy for class.
Jim Zimmerman, the retired teacher, and outdoor enthusiast, was a friendly guy with a disarming smile. I am thankful for the opportunity to know Jim, outside the hallowed halls of Southern. He was one of the good guys.
Elaine, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Please know you have my sympathies and are in my thoughts. Though I haven't seen Mr Z in many many years, he comes to mind more often than you probably know. He helped me so much during my high school years in the 70's-- both academically and by being a good friend. He overlooked the fact that I didn't like math much, and persisted until I got it. He's responsible for the fact that I became a math teacher, and later a teacher educator. I'm sure there are many others who have similar stories- what a profound and positive influence.

Zimmerman family: Please accept my sincere condolences. Mr. Z. was by far the most professional, competent, and demanding teacher I ever had. He taught me more than just algebra, geometry, and calculus. He taught me the valuable lessons of hard work, perseverance, and determination. Lessons that served me well in his high school classroom and beyond. His influences changed the lives of many students and put us on the proper paths for success in college and in our professional careers. There will never be another like him. He will be missed.

This man made a tremendous difference in my life. Throughout the years, I had often thought about reaching out to Mr. Zimmerman to let him know how much he changed my life. As a young and naïve freshman, I hadn't yet had a teacher that would scare me into submission! The rumors of how tough he was, how he wrote the hardest tests, not to breathe unless given permission. Needless to say on the first day of class (which I will always remember), sitting in the front row watching this very tall and daunting man write math equations (with excellent handwriting) on the board - trying to not make any sudden movements but thinking to myself I am in so much trouble! How am I ever going to get through this class?! But in time, throughout that semester, I saw a very compassionate side of Mr. Zimmerman - a man who made me believe in myself, wouldn't let me take the easy way out, pushed me to my potential and cared about me. I didn't realize the impact he was making then, but through the years my mind would find its way to the time I had with Mr. Zimmerman. As an adult, I truly understand and appreciate all that he did for me. The life that he helped me lead. To hold my chin up - wherever I go.
My advice - if you ever find yourself thinking that you should reach out and share with someone how you feel and how they made a difference - tell them - don't wait. Eventually it may be too late.
So in closing - Thank you Mr. Zimmerman for being the man that you were and helping to shape the woman I am today. You will never be forgotten

My condolences are with the Zimmerman family. It is with great sadness that I hear of Mr. Zimmerman’s passing. He was a monumental instructor, tutor, and mentor. In class he pushed us beyond limits we knew we had. Honestly, his classes were the most I feared, but they were also the most I remember. Rest in peace, Sir.

Dear Elaine & Family,
Our hearts are very heavy today by the absence of Jim in our lives. He and Ed were friends for 50 years. They taught together at SHS, played golf, talked on the phone and laughed endlessly, given the senses of humor of those two! Jim came to visit us in FL shortly after we moved here; that was a true gesture of friendship. He spent time in Myrtle Beach with us, also. He and I shared a classroom at Southern Middle School when SHS was undergoing renovation. Jim was a remarkable teacher who prepared his students well. He will be missed!

It is with great sadness that we have heard of Jim's parting. As Debbie and I wrap up our winter in Florida, our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Zimmerman family.
